King and Commander in Chief: Charles Albert de Savoie
Possessing a great amount of pride and pomp, but little political ability, Charles Albert is a well respected and well-renowned King in Italy. Styled Padre della Patria (father of the fatherland), and 'The Liberator,' he is seen as a decisive and accomplished leader. Despite the Italian Crown retaining most of the Kingdom's constitutional power, the competence and political acumen of his ministers has caused this power to wane. However, the House of Savoy has a great military tradition, which has been extended to the wider Piedmontese nobility, and Charles Albert remains a competent General and acts as Commander in Chief of the armed forces.
Prime Minister: Count Camillo Benso, de Cavour
Place of Origin: Turin, Piedmont-Sardinia
Affiliated Ideas and Organisations: Liberal Party, Interventionist, Expansionist, Monarchist, Industrialist
Count Cavour is the arch-moderate of Italian politics. Using all his political clout, he has created a government of all the talents to bring Italy forward into its unified future.
Minister of Finance: Cesare Balbo
Place of Origin: Turin, Piedmont-Sardinia
Affiliated Ideas and Organisations: Monarchist, Liberal Party, Nationalist, Secularist
Cesare Balbo is a talented political, legal and literary mind. He was suspected of sympathising with the revolt of 1821, which of course he did not. A loyal subject of the House of Savoy, he remains committed to serving his King, even after returning from exile, and is a close political ally of Count Cavour.
Foreign Secretary: Massimo Taparelli, Marquis D'Azeglio
Place of Origin: Turin, Piedmont-Sardinia
Affiliated Ideas and Organisations: Liberal Party, Monarchist, Nationalist, Culturalist, Society for Patriotic History
Massimo D'Azeglio has a strong intellectual mind, bowing out of the military inheritance of his family and seeking a career in the arts. Finding little success, he took roles in the Piedmontese administration, as would be expected of a man of his birth, and quickly became a prominent member of the foreign office.
Minister for Culture, Unity and National Progress: Francesco de Sanctis
Place of Origin: Morra Irpina, Kingdom of the Two Sicilies
Affiliated Ideas and Organisations: Liberal (progressive), Culturalist, Nationalist, Society for Patriotic History
De Sanctis is a recognised and admired literary critic, respected for his sound and extensive knowledge of Italian literature. Shared culture, he believes, is the only way to bind the Italian people together under one government.
Warden of the Mezzagiorno, and Protector of Sicily: Guiseppe Garibaldi
Place of Origin: Nice, Piedmont-Sardinia
Affiliated Ideas and Organisations: Militarist, Monarchist (ish), Socialist, Liberal (progressive), Nationalist, Young Italy, Order of Italians
Few Italians surpass the reputation possessed by Guiseppe Garibaldi, the Hero of the Two Worlds. The opinion of commoners has driven his ascension into quasi-Sainthood, and he is seen as the only man who can bring peace and stability to Italy's Southern regions. As such, this position was created for him, allowing him to combat brigandry and unrest in the Southern hills using his freshly reformed Order of Italians.
Minister for Industry: Quintino Sella
Place of Origin: Naples, The Two Sicilies
Affiliated Ideas and Organisations: Liberal Party, Monarchist, Industrialist
Sella is a young but bright politician, from a noble Neapolitan family. Having studied Engineering in France, he was astounded by the rapid industrialisation of the major European powers and the development that can be achieved via modernisation. He has long taken an interest in the industrialisation of Italy, believing the resources of Sicily and Sardinia hold the key to a more productive economy.
